Reception

How to help your child at home

Reading
As parents/carers you play a vital role in helping your child develop a lifelong love of reading. Every week your child will receive their ebook which their teacher will have assigned to them. They can read this book again to you to develop their fluency and confidence. This reading is their moment to shine as they will have read it twice at school already. Your child will also bring home a reading for pleasure book for you to enjoy together. Please remember that you shouldn’t expect your child to read this alone. Read it to or with them. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!

 Phonics

We teach phonics through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. This is a systematic, synthetic phonics programme to teach early reading and spelling. The programme is energetic and dynamic with the mission of teaching every child to read and love it!

Every year we have parent workshops to explain how the programme is taught in Reception and how you can support your child at home. See below for the slides from this recent workshop.
